Close to the beach in Southern California we came upon this tree, laden with birds and their nests. It reminded me of all the high density housing we are building in our cities today.
There was not another tree around with so many nests in it. This one must have provided the perfect spot in which to build and raise a family, with the added bonus of having safety in numbers. Your neighbor can help fend off predators and maybe even do a little bit of babysitting.
Nature provides in all kinds of ways. This tree is not the most beautiful to us. But to these birds it was just what they needed. Another kind of bird would not think so. Just as some of us love living in high rise housing, closely packed with neighbors, others see them as blight. As we watch more and more large apartment and condo complexes appear and think they will never be filled, many see them as opportunity.
I do wonder when these birds fly in, how they know which nest is theirs. To me they all look the same. But they do. Just as I do when I come home and all the other condos look exactly like mine. I seem to have no trouble finding my home or my mate. Maybe they look down on all the humans passing below their tree and think, “How do they tell each other apart? They all look the same.”
